Story SummaryThe film opens with the historic independence of Bangladesh and after the third Indo-Pakistani War of 1971. Starving, two kids named Bikram and Bala are taken in by a man named Lateef (Pankaj Tripathi), who offers them to work for him, and illegally smuggle guns to other men. He cares for them until one day an army officer that they give guns to, tells Lateef to leave one of the two boys behind to work as his child sex slave or otherwise he'll take Lateef's daughter. Bikram hears this and tells Lateef that he'll stay behind in order to save Bala, his friend. Bala then comes back to save Bikram and kills the army officer. The two boys then run away, as Lateef is killed by the police.

They arrive at Kolkata by train and start their livelihood by working at a small restaurant. Bala gets into a fight with the owner who slaps him, scolds him and calls him a refugee. They start looting coal from trains and selling it in the market for a lower price. Then Bala slaps the owner of restaurant and warns him. As they grow up, Bikram (Ranveer Singh) and Bala (Arjun Kapoor) have started looting whole coal trains. In this process, they kill famous coal trader Divakar, (Deepraj Rana), who calls them "refugees" and does illegal coal trades. But their hearts always yearn for their own identity in India, with the boys believing they are Indians. On their journey from gun couriers to coal bandits and new businessmen, they convert all their illegal trades to legal business with the help of Kali Kaka (Saurabh Shukla), they become town heroes, building schools and hospitals. They also provide work and help to the poor, thus becoming white collared and good hearted 'Gunday'. A.C.P. Satyajeet Sarkar (Irrfan Khan) who is now summoned to Kolkata to catch Bikram and Bala, however, with the brothers successful in covering their tracks, Sarkar warns them that he will arrest them the day he finds a single piece of evidence against them.

Then Nandita (Priyanka Chopra), a cabaret dancer, enters the boys' lives and both Bikram and Bala fall in love with her. They decide that whomever she loves will marry her. After some persistent wooing, Nandita calls them to a theater where Bala gets into a quarrel with a person over a comment on her and subsequently kills the man. Bikram asks Bala to run away for now so that he can be safe and promises not to meet Nandita until he returns. Nandita tells Bikram she is in love with him and if he does not come to Durga Puja, she will never see him again. Bikram agrees to the meet, however, Bala finds out about this through one of his henchmen, Himanshu, (Anant Sharma) and returns to Kolkata during Durga Puja. On spotting Bikram and Nandita together, Bala shoots at Bikram in rage after blaming him of breaking his promise, but misses and the bullet hits Nandita. She is rushed to hospital and survives, but Bikram and Bala's friendship is damaged in the process.

Bala then finds out that all their business is in Bikram's name, hence he angrily calls Bikram and asks for equal partition of the business. He agrees and transfers half the business to Bala. Bala then talks about dividing Nandita between them, with the "winner" getting to marry her. Bikram gets angry and they both start fighting. Bikram wins but spares Bala, as Bala once saved Bikram when they were kids. Bikram warns Bala not to bother Nandita or he will kill him. Bikram and Nandita decide to get married but she gets kidnapped by Bala. Bikram then joins hands with Sarkar and goes against Bala. Nandita feels bad for Bala as he wants to marry her and warns her that if she won't dump Bikram, he'll kill her. She then explains to him that she still loves Bikram, explaining the characteristics that Bikram has that Bala doesn't. Bala lets Nandita leave, as he realises his mistake. Nandita is then revealed to be an under cover police officer working for Sarkar, and is helping him to get Bikram and Bala separated. Meanwhile, Bikram gets to know about the true identity of Nandita as well as the man who Bala "killed" is also alive, with the man also a police officer. Nandita tried to convince Bikram otherwise, but Bikram believes that the police system were responsible for destroying his and Bala's innocence and childhood. Nandita wants Bikram to surrender but he refuses and goes away to reunite Bala.

Bala gets trapped by his own henchmen Himanshu who is the late coal bandit's brother, who was killed by Bikram and Bala. Bikram rescues Bala and they kill Himanshu. Both get reunited but find themselves surrounded by police, spearheaded with Sarkar and Nandita. After a long chase they both get cornered by Sarkar and Nandita. Nandita tries to convince Bikram that she is truly in love with him and he should surrender, whilst Sarkar also tries to convince Bala to surrender. But to their surprise, Bikram and Bala spot a train passing by and start running to catch it. Sarkar and Nandita then start firing bullets at them. The film ends with bullets fired towards them but it does not reveal that they were killed or not.

When they ran to save their lives for the first time, they were mere 12-year-old boys, and the world called them 'refugees'. The war of 1971 gave birth to a new country - Bangladesh. It also gave birth to two young orphans - Bikram and Bala. They witnessed the war and its aftermath, where the world tried to trample over them. Fighting for survival, they clung to each other and escaped to Calcutta. Before they knew the world, they knew each other. Such was their bond, such was their friendship. Each time they sought new beginnings, each time they would rise, the world would crush them down. So, they fought again... and again. Together they were unbeatable. They were unstoppable. They were inseparable. In the years that passed, Bikram and Bala, became Calcutta's most loved, most celebrated, most reckless, most fearless and most powerful GUNDAY! They had everything... then, one fine day, bells rang... Nandita, the most beautiful cabaret dancer, walked into their lives, and they lost everything to her. Their murky world turned magical and colourful. They fell head over heels in love with her. But that was only a blissful lull before an impending storm... And then entered ACP Satyajeet Sarkar, the right for every wrong, a law for every outlaw and a counter force for Bikram and Bala. What follows from here is the most sensational-most thrilling-most dramatic story ever told!
