Story SummaryMeera (Durga Khote), is immersed in her love and devotion to Lord Krishna since a young age. When she grows older her family get her married to the Rana of Mewar Prithviraj Kapoor. Misunderstandings occur when her devotional poetry is thought to be love songs for someone. Several hardships are inflicted on her by her husband and her in-laws. She takes to sitting in the temple and singing bhajans (sacred songs) composed by her. Her brother-in-law tries to have her killed many times but fails. She finally renounces her life in the palace and wanders from place to place singing devotional songs.

Bug-budget saint film on the life of Meera (Chandrabati Devi/Khote), a princess of the Rajput kingdom of Chittor married to the king of Mewad (Bannerjee/Kapoor). She is persecuted by her husband and her brother-in-law when she abandons worldly possessions to become a devotee of Krishna. She undertakes a journey of penance and performs a miracle which the king attributes to the machinations of the evil army chief Abhiram.

  1. In 1933 was the Hindi|Bengali Rajrani Meera/Meerabai. The other popular film was Meera (1945) by Ellis Duncan who made it as a bilingual in Tamil and Hindi. Both films had the vocals of the famous Carnatic singer M. S. Subbalakshmi.
  2. The film made Prithviraj Kapoor who played the role of the King of Mewar, Mirabai’s husband, a big star and is cited as one his career-best films.
  3. Alternate-language version of Meerabai (1933)
  4. Several films have been made in India on the subject of Mirabai since the time of silent era. In 1921 itself there were two, Kanjibhai Rathod’s Meerabai (1921) and Ramnik Desai’s Meerabai (1921)
